Legal
Parent and Guardian Terms
What to expect when you use TUTSA to find a tutor, what we check, and where our role ends.
Last updated 2 September 2026
In short
Using TUTSA to find a tutor is free and needs no account. When you engage a tutor, your agreement is with that tutor and not with TUTSA. You pay the tutor directly and we take nothing from it.
You remain responsible for deciding whether a tutor is right for your child, and for supervising lessons.
1. Who these terms are for
These terms apply to parents, legal guardians and adult learners who use TUTSA to find and contact a tutor. They apply in addition to our Website Terms and Privacy Policy.
If you are under 18, you may only use the site with the involvement of a parent or legal guardian, who must send any enquiry on your behalf.
2. Our role, and the limits of it
TUTSA introduces you to independent tutors. That is the whole of our role.
When you engage a tutor, the agreement for lessons is between you and that tutor. TUTSA is not a party to it. We do not employ the tutor, we do not supply the tutoring, and we do not receive any part of what you pay.
This means the tutor, not TUTSA, is responsible for the lessons, for their conduct, for their punctuality and for the standard of their teaching.
3. What it costs you
Searching, shortlisting, sending an enquiry and requesting an introductory call are free for families. There is no booking fee and no commission. You will never be asked to pay TUTSA for finding a tutor.
You pay the tutor directly, at the rate you and the tutor agree, using whatever method the two of you arrange.
4. Enquiries
When you send an enquiry we pass it to the tutor you selected, together with your name, contact details and your message. We do not send it to tutors you did not choose.
We cannot guarantee that a tutor will reply, or that they will still be available. Tutors manage their own diaries. If you do not hear back within a few days, send an enquiry to another tutor.
5. The introductory call
Many tutors offer a complimentary introductory call of about 15 minutes so that you can talk before committing. The call is offered by the tutor, not by TUTSA, and it is at the tutor’s discretion. Use it to ask about experience with the curriculum your child is written into, about approach, and about availability.
6. What we check, and what we do not
Before a profile is published we review the tutor’s South African identity document or passport against the name on the profile, and we review the qualification documents they upload.
Verification does not mean:
- That we have assessed how well the tutor teaches
- That we endorse or recommend them
- That we have conducted a criminal record check, unless a profile expressly states otherwise
- That every claim on the profile has been independently confirmed
Choosing a tutor remains your decision. We encourage you to speak to the tutor, ask for references, and satisfy yourself before lessons begin.
7. Safety and supervision
You are responsible for the safety and supervision of your child during lessons. We strongly recommend that:
- In person lessons take place in a public area or in a common area of your home, not behind a closed door
- An adult is present or nearby for the whole lesson where the learner is a minor
- Online lessons take place in a shared room, on a device you can see
- You meet or speak to a tutor before the first lesson
- You do not share a learner’s identity number, school reports, home address or medical information until you have decided to proceed, and then only what is necessary
If anything about a tutor’s conduct concerns you, stop the lessons and tell us at info@tutsa.co.za. If you believe a child is at risk, contact the South African Police Service on 10111 or Childline South Africa on 116.
8. Your child’s information
Section 35 of the Protection of Personal Information Act 4 of 2013 protects children’s personal information. By sending an enquiry about a learner under 18 you confirm that you are the parent or legal guardian, and you consent to us processing the learner information in that enquiry and passing it to the tutor you chose.
Once a tutor receives your enquiry they become responsible, separately from us, for how they handle that information.
9. Rates, cancellation and refunds
Rates, payment terms, cancellation notice and any refund are agreed between you and the tutor. Ask about the cancellation policy before the first lesson so that both of you know where you stand.
TUTSA does not hold your money, does not process lesson payments, and cannot issue a refund for a lesson. A dispute about a lesson or a payment is between you and the tutor.
10. If something goes wrong
Raise it with the tutor first. Most problems are a misunderstanding about times, scope or rates.
If that does not resolve it, tell us at info@tutsa.co.za. We cannot adjudicate a dispute or order a refund, but we do act on reports about conduct, misrepresentation or safety, and we can suspend or remove a profile where that is warranted.
11. No guarantee of results
Tutoring supports learning. It does not guarantee a mark, a pass, or admission anywhere. Nobody on this platform, including TUTSA, promises an academic outcome.
12. Our liability
Nothing here excludes liability that cannot lawfully be excluded, including under the Consumer Protection Act 68 of 2008 where it applies to you.
Subject to that, TUTSA is not liable for the acts or omissions of a tutor, for the quality or outcome of any lesson, for anything that occurs during a lesson, or for any dispute between you and a tutor. Our liability to a family is limited as set out in clause 9 of the Website Terms.
13. Changes
We may update these terms. The date at the top shows when they were last revised.
14. Governing law
These terms are governed by the law of the Republic of South Africa, and the South African courts have jurisdiction.
